Nick Majendie: Profile

  • The first portfolio manager in Canada to publish a regular Portfolio Strategy, Nick started publishing in 1973.
  • In the last 20 years, Nick has been rated by institutions as one of Canada's top ranked* Portfolio Strategists.
  • Nick was the only person in Canada to forecast - in print - the last two major bear markets, namely 1973/1974 and 1982.
  • Nick forecast - in print - the start of the last bull market in August 1982 and the recent bull market in October 2002.
  • Nick was among the first in Canada to draw attention to the Government debt problem and publish a major study quantifying Canada's federal and provincial debt difficulties.
  • In 1984 and twice in the mid-1990s, Nick published major studies examining the risk of deflation in North America and globally. In 1984, he concluded that disinflation was more likely than deflation and that would be very bullish for bonds and stocks. In the mid-1990s, Nick concluded that the risk of deflation was rising but, as yet, was not great enough to change investment policy. He developed the "Majendie Deflation Monitor" - a proprietary tool - to assess whether the risks of deflation were rising or falling. Only in the last year have other commentators begun to worry about this issue while the Majendie Monitor has been in existence for six years.
  • Since 1984, Nick has been visiting the management of the top 58 companies in Canada twice a year and producing earnings and cash flow estimates models on each one. Nick uses these companies to execute the equity portion of his portfolio strategy.
  • Known for his ability to read the pulse of Canadian markets, Nick Majendie is a frequent business commentator in the national newspapers, radio and television.
  • Nick is currently a Director and Senior Vice President of Canaccord Capital Corporation, responsible for the firm's Portfolio Strategy and manager of The Independence Accounts.
